How does the AS5 Compare?

The Amerisleep AS5 mattress is the softest option in the Amerisleep line. It is also the thickest (14 inches) and most expensive at $1899 for a queen.

Amerisleep has 5 models total, the others being AS1AS2AS3, and AS4. The AS5 (formerly known a.post-paras the Independence) has a very plush feel, and is definitely best for someone looking for a very soft and pressure-relieving mattress.

Construction

The AS5 is an all foam mattress made of four layers totalling 14 inches in height. It was designed to be the softest mattress in the Amerisleep line and uses what they call the Active Flex layer, which is not present in the construction of any of their other models.

Cover – The cover for all of the mattresses in the Amerisleep line is made of a soft blend of polyester, Celliant and spandex. It’s a stretchy material that snaps back into place quickly, so you won’t have to worry about the cover bunching up when you change positions on the mattress. Some studies have shown there are recovery benefits to Celliant. I don’t have the expertise to discuss these studies, but if it interests you I recommend doing some research on the subject.

In terms of how the cover felt, I found it to be pretty soft and that it had a bit of a cozy feeling to it. As I was pressing into the mattress I could feel airflow through the cover, which showed its breathability to help with temperature regulation and cooling.

Comfort – The comfort layer of the AS5 consists of 3 inches of memory foam (4 lb density, 10ILD) which will allow you to sink into the mattress for pressure relief. This material has a slow response to pressure and will provide the classic memory foam feeling of contouring to the body. Some memory foams have a reputation for trapping body heat but Amerisleep uses a plant-based memory foam with an open celled structure, which will help to dissipate that heat and help you sleep cool.

Compression – Below the comfort layer is 2 inches of foam (3 lb density, 11 ILD) that Amerisleep calls the Active Flex layer. This foam is a soft material with roughly the same firmness as the memory foam above it, so it will allow the sleeper to sink in further for greater pressure relief. While it is a soft foam it has a quick response to pressure to provide some bounce so, while you will sink in, you won’t feel stuck in the mattress.

Transition – Below the Active Flex layer is a 2 inch poly foam layer (1.65 lb density, 30 ILD) that is convoluted to create space in the mattress for air to flow through for temperature regulation and cooling. This layer has a quick response to pressure and is a bit firmer to act as a transition layer from the soft layers above to the base below. I should also mention that it is zoned to provide pressure relief in common problem areas such as at the shoulders and lower back.

Base – The foundation of the mattress is made of a 7 inch layer of high density poly foam (1.8 lb density, 35 ILD) that works to support the layers above it as well as deep compression support to the sleeper on top. The base is also the layer that gives the AS5 its shape and provides some durability to the mattress as a whole.

Firmness

When I first pressed into the AS5 I felt the soft memory foam comfort layer allow me to sink in pretty easily and contouring to my hand. Because of the slow response to pressure I could see the outline of my hand when I removed it from the mattress. As I applied more pressure and pressed into the mattress with both hands I found that I sunk pretty deep into the mattress before interacting with the support layers.

Everyone will feel the firmness of a mattress a little bit differently because of different body types, weights and sizes. To make sure that you would get a better idea of the firmness of the AS5 I brought in three more testers to try it out. The wider variety of opinions on the mattress should give you a better idea of what to expect from the firmness of the AS5.

Amerisleep AS5 Firmness Graph
Showing the firmness ratings from four testers

As I mentioned before the AS5 is designed to be the softest mattress in the Amerisleep line and our testers found that to be true. 6.5/10 is generally considered to be a medium firmness and with an average of just under 6/10 the AS5 came in on the softer side of the scale. I personally rated the AS5 as a 5.5/10 and found that the soft comfort and Active Flex layers allowed me to sink pretty deep into the mattress.

Pressure Map

Instead of just describing the feel of the AS5 I wanted to provide a visual representation of where pressure points may form while you are lying on the mattress. To do this I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. On the image below pressure will be represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Amerisleep AS5 Pressure Map
Pressure map of the Amerisleep AS5 mattress

When I lied down on my back the AS5 had a classic memory foam feeling of a little bit of firmness followed by sinking in and contouring to my body. As my weight and body heat caused my to sink in further I could feel the mattress fill in the space beneath my lower back. The pressure map results above show low pressure across my entire body, which I expected as my weight was pretty evenly distributed. I was pretty impressed by how easily I was able to adjust my position given how deep into the mattress I was sinking and I credit that to the quick response of the Active Flex layer.

Once I rolled onto my side the results show only a small increase in pressure at the shoulders and hips, which are two problem areas for many side sleepers. I was really impressed with the performance of the AS5 in terms of pressure relief in this position as side sleepers often have trouble with the increased pressure. Because of the higher weight concentration side sleepers tend to push further into their mattresses and prefer softer mattress that allow them to sink in for pressure relief. I found that the AS5 was very comfortable for me in this position and think it’s a great fit for side sleepers.

I moved onto my stomach and, with my weight evenly distributed again, the pressure map results showed low pressure across my entire body. In this position I did feel my hips sink into the mattress a bit, which isn’t good for stomach sleepers. Softer mattresses can cause problems for stomach sleepers as their hips push into the mattress, putting their back in a bad position. Given the arch in my back I would recommend looking at one of the firmer models in the Amerisleep line (AS1AS2 or AS3) if you are a strict stomach sleeper.

Motion Transfer

For those that share their bed with a partner, it will be important to know what it will feel like when the other person changes positions or gets into and out of bed at night. I use the next test to simulate those actions and to show the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

For this test I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance on the other side of the mattress. This should be pretty intuitive: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Amerisleep AS5 Motion Transfer

The AS5 had really impressive results on the motion transfer test for all three drops. I would say that the AS5 had one of the best performances across the board for this test and that I was really impressed with its ability to isolate motion. I credit the soft top two layers of foam with muffling the disturbance across the mattress.

Sinkage Test

Many people buying a mattress will want to know when they will feel like they are more on top of or sinking into the mattress. I have already mentioned a number of times that the AS5 allowed me to sink in for pressure relief but to get a better idea of how different people might sink in I used four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) and placed them on the mattress to measure how much they compressed the surface.

These different sizes, weights, and densities help to imitate different body parts or different sized people to show how far into a mattress you may sink.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1 inch of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

Edge Support

If you share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface of the mattress then edge support is an important attribute to look at. Foam mattresses, especially those that use softer foams, can sometimes struggle with edge support when compared to traditional innerspring mattresses, so I was interested to have a look at how I would feel near the side of the AS5.

Amerisleep AS5 Edge Support Laying
Edge support while lying near the edge of the Amerisleep AS5 mattress

I did see some compression through the soft top layers of foam while I was lying on my back near the side of the AS5. The image above shows how the mattress allowed me to sink in while lying near the edge and I would say the feeling was pretty consistent with the center of the mattress as well. Even with the compression in this position never felt like I was insecure in my position on top of the mattress.

Amerisleep AS5 Edge Support Side Laying
Edge support while lying on my side near the edge of the Amerisleep AS5 mattress

As I rolled onto my side I increased my weight concentration causing my to compress the top of the AS5 further. As you can see above the mattress contoured to my body well near the side of the structure, which allow my hips and shoulders to sink in and keep my back aligned well. Even with this increased compression and with me hanging off the side of the bed a little bit I felt that the AS5 held up well during this portion of the test.

Amerisleep AS5 Edge Support Corner Seated
Support while sitting on the edge of the mattress

Finally I sat up on the side of the Amerisleep AS5, concentrating all of my weight over one portion of the edge of the mattress. Again there is compression through the soft layers on top but I found that the transition layer and high density poly foam base did a great job of supporting me on the side of the AS5. Overall I would say that the AS5 has great edge support.

Now that we’ve taken a deep dive into the Amerisleep AS5 it’s time to

  • Side Sleepers – Side sleepers want to be conscious of pressure points that can form at problem areas, such as the hips and shoulders, and because of this tend to prefer softer mattresses that allow them to sink in a bit. I found that the AS5’s soft top layers of foam allowed me to sink far into the mattress and that it performed extremely well during the pressure map portion of the review, showing only a slight increase in pressure when I was lying on my side.

Amerisleep AS4 Mattress Review

The Amerisleep AS4 mattress is one of the softer mattresses from the series of memory foam beds by Amerisleep. It’s built with three layers of memory foam that are softer and more cooling than the AS1, AS2, and AS3 mattresses.

The Amerisleep AS4 mattress is one of the softer mattresses from the series of memory foam beds by Amerisleep. It’s built with three layers of memory foam that are softer and more cooling than the AS1, AS2, and AS3 mattresses.

Amerisleep AS4 Highlights

The Amerisleep AS4 offers cooling properties in two of its three layers. The top layer is proprietary plant-based memory foam, which sleeps much cooler than traditional synthetic foam. It undergoes a process called reticulation, where the cell walls of the foam are blown out while the foam shape remains intact, which makes the top layer much more breathable. The middle layer’s surface contains breathable channels that promote higher airflow.

In addition, the cover contains Celliant, which is known to reduce pain, regulate body temperature, and promote healthy blood circulation.

Amerisleep recommends this mattress most highly for side and combo sleepers, with a medium-soft supportive feel.

It’s built with three layers of memory foam, including Amerisleep’s proprietary, cooling Bio-Pur® and HIVE® comfort layers. These layers are intended to create a soft and responsive feel so you can sink in the mattress enough to be comfortable, but no such much that you can’t move around.

The design of the AS4 also makes it great at relieving pressure, another important factor for side sleepers. Instead of letting you sink in too far and build up pressure in your hips and shoulders, the Amerisleep AS4 evenly distributes your body weight to avoid pain in the pressure points.

Top this all off with the high-performance Celliant® cover made with Thermo-reactive yarn and you truly have a great bed. This cover design safely turns your body heat into infrared energy to help wick away heat and keep you cool in your sleep.

Amerisleep AS2 Mattress Review

Is it time to replace that old mattress? Well, you’re in luck. Amerisleep’s AS2 mattress is here and ready to restore order to your bedroom. Amerisleep has been creating quality mattresses and sleep products for close to a decade now.

Does the AS2 mattress have what it takes? Continue reading for my full review below and see if the AS2 is the right choice for you.

Amerisleep AS2 Mattress

On the firmer end of the Spectrum, the Amerisleep AS2 is great for stomach or back sleepers. Use code LETSLEEPBETTER to save $250 with our exclusive discount!

How does the AS2 Compare?

The Amerisleep AS2 is perhaps the most popular (or a close second to the AS3) in the Amerisleep line. Amerisleep is known for memory foam mattresses that actually sleep cool and do a good job of avoiding the “stuck in the bed” feeling. Amerisleep has 5 models total, the others being AS1, AS3, AS4, and AS5. The AS2 (formerly known as the Revere) is the second firmest model in the line, and could work for any type of sleepers – though pure side sleepers may opt for a slightly softer model.

Construction

The Amerisleep AS2 is an all foam mattress made of three layers and totaling 12 inches in height. The mattress is meant to be the second firmest in the Amerisleep line and uses a combination of a thin memory foam layer and a poly foam transition layer to provide pressure relief without the feeling of being stuck in the mattress.

Cover – The cover for the AS2 is the same as all mattresses from the Amerisleep line. It is made of a soft blend of polyester, Celliant and spandex, creating a stretchy material that snaps back into place quickly, so you won’t have to worry about it bunching up when changing positions on the mattress.

I found the cover slightly cool to the touch thanks in part to the Celliant blended into the material. I should note that there have been some studies that show Celliant to have positive effects on muscle recovery. I don’t personally have the expertise to speak on the science behind the recovery benefits of Celliant, but you may want to do some research of your own if you are interested.

Amerisleep AS2 Cover
Close up of the Amerisleep AS2 mattress

Comfort – The comfort layer of the AS2 is made of 2 inches of memory foam. Memory foam allows the sleeper to sink in for pressure relief and is known for the classic feel of contouring to the body. At times memory foam can have a reputation for trapping body heat, but Amerisleep uses a memory foam with an open cell design to defend against overheating.

Transition – Below the comfort layer is 3 inches of poly foam, creating what Amerisleep calls the Affinity Layer. This layer is convoluted (wavy design) to allow space for air to flow through the mattress for temperature regulation and cooling.

This layer is made of a pretty firm foam to provide some initial support and has a quick response to pressure, which gives the mattress some bounce. This bounce and support helps keep the sleeper from feeling stuck in the mattress as they change positions. The firmer foam used in this layer provides a transition from the soft comfort layer above to the base of the mattress below.

Base – The foundation of the mattress is a 7 inch layer of high density poly foam. This is a firm foam that provides support to the layers above as well as deep compression support to the sleeper. This layer also provides the mattress with its shape and lends some durability to the structure.

Amerisleep AS2 Construction

Firmness

The initial feel when pressing into the AS2 is of the memory foam comfort layer, which allows me to sink in and contours to my hand a bit. When I applied more force and pressed into the mattress with both hand I went through the memory foam and began to interact with the poly foam layer beneath. This firmer layer provides a smooth transition from the soft layer of memory foam to the firm base layer at the bottom.

Amerisleep AS2 Hand Press
Pressing into the Amerisleep AS2 mattress

People will feel the firmness of a mattress differently based on different weights and body types. Instead of just giving my opinion on the overall firmness of the Amerisleep AS2 I brought in three other people to give it a try as well. This range of opinions should give you a better idea of the firmness you can expect from this mattress.

Amerisleep AS2 Firmness Graph
Showing the firmness ratings from four testers

A 6.5/10 is generally considered to be medium firmness and with the AS2 responses averaging almost 8/10 on the firmness scale, you can expect this mattress to be pretty firm. I rated the mattress at a 7.5/10, and while I did feel the classic memory foam feel on top, I found the transition layer below to be pretty firm. I would say that the AS2 provides good support to keep the back aligned well and bounce to keep the sleeper from feeling stuck in the mattress when changing positions.

See how the AS2 compares to the other mattresses in the Amerisleep line.

Pressure Map

In order to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points while lying on the Amerisleep AS2, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. On the image below pressure will be represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Amerisleep AS2 Pressure Map
Pressure map of the Amerisleep AS2 mattress

On my back the results show blue for low pressure across my body, which matches what I felt while on the mattress. In this position I did feel that I sunk in slightly, thanks to the memory foam, but that I definitely felt more on top of the mattress than in it. While in this position I could feel the foam layers filling in the space beneath my lower back, which is a plus for those that sleep on their back. I should also note that I didn’t feel stuck in the mattress, as can happen with memory foam, and I attribute that to the transition layer beneath the memory foam.

As I mentioned before the AS2 is designed to be the second firmest mattress in the Amerisleep line, which helps to explain the higher pressure shown on the results above. This increased pressure on a firmer mattress can cause issues for side sleepers, especially in areas like the shoulders and hips which dig into the mattress a bit more. I did feel the increase in pressure while lying on the AS2 and if you are a strict side sleeper I would recommend taking a look at one of the softer mattresses in Amerisleeps line.

Once I rolled back onto my stomach my weight was evenly distributed and the pressure map shows low pressure across my entire body. This low pressure is important at the chest, where an increase in pressure can make it harder to breath for stomach sleepers. I found that the AS2 did a good job of keeping my hips from sinking in, which is good for stomach sleepers as that will help keep the back in a better position.

Motion Transfer

If you are going to share your bed with a partner you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person gets into and out of bed or tosses and turns during the night. This next test is helpful in showing the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

For this test I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance on the other side of the mattress. This should be pretty intuitive: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Amerisleep AS2 Motion Transfer
Motion transfer results for ball dropped from 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches

The 4 inch drop simulates a small disturbance to the bed, such as someone changing positions across the mattress, and the result shown above is a good outcome when compared to other mattresses I have put through this test. The 8 and 12 inch drops are meant to show the disturbance that would be felt when someone climbs or jumps into bed. These results are a bit higher than the 4 inch drop, as should be expected, but they are about average for foam mattresses.

Sinkage Test

To better understand how someone might sink into the AS2, I used four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) and placed them on the mattress to measure how much they compress the surface.

These different sizes, weights, and densities help to imitate different body parts or different sized people to show how far into a mattress you may sink.

Amerisleep AS2 Sinkage Test
Mattress sinkage with 6 lb, 10 lb, 50 lb, and 100 lb balls
  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1 inch of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress and need to use the entire surface then edge support is something you are going to want to take a look at. While some foam mattresses struggle to live up to the edge support of traditional innerspring mattresses, I have seen good performances from other Amerisleeps in the line, so I was interested to see how the AS2 would stack up.

Edge support while lying near the edge of the Amerisleep AS2 mattress

While lying on my back near the side of the mattress I found that the AS2 provided the same feel as near the center. As I moved right up to the side there was a slight amount of compression through the soft comfort layer but overall I didn’t feel that I affected the edge much.

Amerisleep AS2 Edge Support Side Laying
Edge support while lying on my side near the edge of the Amerisleep AS2 mattress

When I rolled onto my side I found that the AS2 held up well even with the increased pressure in this position. When I hung off the side of the mattress there was again some compression through the top of the mattress, but nothing that shouldn’t be expected from a softer foam.

Amerisleep AS2 Edge Support Corner Seated
Support while sitting on the edge of the mattress

When sitting up on the side of the mattress, my weight was concentrated over a smaller area of the edge. Again the soft layers compressed a bit, but I found that the AS2 held up really well with increased weight on the side and that the mattress has great edge support.

Now that we’ve taken a look at what the AS2 has to offer, it’s time to discuss who I think it would be a good fit for.

  • Back and Stomach Sleepers – The AS2 is a bit on the firmer side and I found that it did a good job of keeping my hips from sinking in while I was on my back and stomach. This is important for back and stomach sleepers as it keeps their backs aligned in a good position.
  • Couples – The AS2 performed well on both the motion transfer and edge support tests. These are the two tests I reference most when trying to decide if a mattress would be good to share with a partner.
  • Memory Foam Without Stuck Feeling – The 2 inches of memory foam in the comfort layer provide an initial classic memory foam feeling of sinking in a bit and contouring to the body. Following that layer is a transition layer of firm poly foam that provides some bounce to the mattress, so while there is a slight feeling of sinking into the mattress you will be able to adjust position without any added effort.

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Review

After reviewing Amerisleep’s most popular model (the AS3, which I really liked), I was excited to get the chance to test one of their firmest model. The AS1 mattress is the lowest priced Amerisleep at $999 for a Queen (with promo code) and is packed with all of the standard goodness you’d expect from Amerisleep. It has a firm feel targeting back and stomach sleepers, great support, and a stylish cover that promotes cooling rounds out the AS1.

But the big question, how will it perform in a LetsSleepBetter review? Continue reading for my full review below and see if the AS1 is the right choice for you.

Amerisleep AS1 Mattress

The firmest mattress in the Amerisleep line, the AS1 is perfect for stomach or back sleepers. Use code LETSLEEPBETTER to save $250 with our exclusive discount!

AmeriSleep AS1 Mattress

The AS1 is our firmest mattress, and it’s best for back and stomach sleepers who like extra support. We blend our proprietary Bio-Pur and Bio-Core foam layers to provide comfortable but stable cushioning, and the Celliant cover is made with thermo-reactive yarn to safely turn body heat into infrared.

How does the AS1 Compare?

Amerisleep is known for high-quality memory foam mattresses that sleep cool and incorporate leading mattress technologies like Celliant covers, Bio-Pur foams, and Surface Modification Technology (SMT). Amerisleep has 5 models total, the others being AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5. The AS1 is the firmest model in the line, most likely best for stomach and back sleepers.

Construction

The AS1 is the firmest option available in the Amerisleep line. The mattress uses memory foam in the comfort layer but has a quick transition to a high density poly foam below, giving it a firm feeling for strong support.

Cover – The cover for all mattresses from the Amerisleep line is made of a soft blend of polyester, Celliant and spandex. It’s a stretchy material and the cover snaps back into place quickly, so you won’t have to worry about it bunching up when changing positions on the mattress.

I found the cover slightly cool to the touch thanks in part due to the Celliant blended into the material. I should note that there have been some studies that show Celliant to have positive effects on muscle recovery. I don’t personally have the expertise to speak on the science behind the recovery benefits of Celliant, but you may want to do some research of your own if you are interested.

Amerisleep AS1 Cover
Close up of the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

Comfort Layer – The comfort layer of the AS1 consists of 2 inches of memory foam. This layer will provide some contouring to the body and allow the sleeper to sink in a little for pressure relief. The memory foam does have a slow response to pressure, but with only 2 inches of it you won’t feel stuck in the mattress when changing positions. Memory foam can have a reputation for trapping body heat, but Amerisleep uses a foam with an open celled structure which will dissipate some heat to help sleep a bit cooler.

Base – Immediately below the comfort layer is the base of the mattress which consists of 8 inches of high density poly foam. This is a firm material that provide support to the mattress and the sleeper on top of the mattress. Because of the thin comfort layer and the quick transition to the base, this layer provides the firm feel to the AS1 mattress. This layer also acts as the foundation and provides the mattress with its shape.

Firmness

When I first pressed into the AS1 the feeling was of the soft memory foam comfort layer. While this is a soft layer that provided some contouring to my hand, it is only 2 inches thick which meant that I easily interacted with the layer below. After I pushed in a bit further there was a quick transition to the high density poly foam beneath, which gave the mattress a firmer feeling.

Amerisleep AS1 Hand Press
Pressing into the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

Everyone will feel the firmness of a mattress a bit differently due to differences in body type and weight. Instead of just giving my opinion on the overall firmness level, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the AS1.

Amerisleep AS1 Firmness Ratings
Showing the firmness ratings from four testers

All of the Sleepopolis testers found the AS1 to be near the top end of the firmness scale. This goes along with Amerisleep’s intention of having it as the firmest mattress in their line.

I rated the AS1 as a 8/10 on the firmness scale and found that much of the feeling for the mattress was provided by the firm polyfoam base. While there was some memory foam feel and contour to the mattress, thanks to the comfort layer, I pushed through that pretty quickly to the support layer of the structure.

Pressure Map

To give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points while lying on the Amerisleep AS1, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. On the image below pressure will be represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Amerisleep AS1 Pressure Map
Pressure map of the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

When I lied down on my back I found that the initial feel was a classic memory foam feel with an initial firmness and then sinking in a bit into the mattress. My weight is evenly distributed in this position and the results from the pressure map show low pressure across my entire body. This goes along with what I was feeling while lying on the mattress.

Even with the memory foam on top I felt that the AS1 was firm and kept my hips from sinking in while I was on my back. This helped keep my spine aligned and in a good position to avoid aches and pains.

Once I rolled onto my side I did feel some pressure begin to form at my shoulders and hips. The pressure map results above show increased pressure on my side, which I was expecting on a mattress this firm. Side sleepers tend to prefer softer mattresses as they allow them to sink in for more pressure relief. If you are a strict side sleeper I would recommend taking a look at one of the softer options from the Amerisleep line.

I moved onto my stomach and the pressure map again shows low pressure as my weight is evenly distributed. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firmer mattresses which keep their hips from sinking in, causing the back to be put in a bad position. I found that the AS1 did an excellent job of keeping my hips up and my spine aligned while I was lying on my stomach.

Motion Transfer

If you are sharing the mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person gets into and out of bed or tosses and turns during the night. This next test is helpful in showing the intensity of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

For this test I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance on the other side of the mattress. This should be pretty intuitive: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Amerisleep AS1 Motion Transfer
Motion transfer results for ball dropped from 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches

The 4 inch drop, which simulates someone changing positions on the other side of the bed, shows very little motion transfer. This is a very good result on this test and I believe the memory foam in the comfort layer really helps to muffle some of the low level of disturbance.

The readings for the 8 inch drop, think someone climbing into bed, also show a great result for the AS1 on this test. This level of motion transfer is impressive for a firmer mattress such as this one. While the 12 inch drop does show a higher spike in disturbance, as expected in this test, the tail of the disturbance is cut off pretty quickly. This means that there isn’t much rebound on the motion transfer, which can be found in bouncier mattresses.

When compared to other Amerisleep mattresses I would say that the AS1 performs similarly to the AS2 and AS3. I did find that the AS4 and AS5 had more impressive results on the motion transfer test, but that should be expected as those mattresses have thicker memory foam layers.

Sinkage Test

In order to get a good idea of how someone might sink into the mattress, I used four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) and placed them on the AS1 to measure how much they compress the surface.

These different sizes, weights, and densities help to imitate different body parts or different sized people to show how far into a mattress you may sink.

Amerisleep AS1 Sinkage Test
Mattress sinkage with 6 lb, 10 lb, 50 lb, and 100 lb balls
  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1 inch of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 3.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5 inches of sinkage.

Edge Support

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then edge support is something you are going to want to take a look at. I have found that all foam mattresses can struggle to live up to the edge support of traditional innerspring mattresses, so I wanted to have a look at AS1 to see how I would feel near the side of the mattress.

Amerisleep AS1 Edge Support Laying
Edge support while lying near the edge of the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

While lying near the edge of the AS1 I felt well supported on my back. When i moved close to the side of the bed there was some compression through the soft comfort layer, but it did not cause me to feel unstable on top of the mattress.

Amerisleep AS1 Edge Support Side Laying
Edge support while lying on my side near the edge of the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

You can see in the image above that once I rolled onto my side I again compressed the soft top of the AS1. Even with the compression through the comfort layer I still found there to be a firm feel and strong support near the edge of the mattress.

Amerisleep AS1 Edge Support Corner Seated
Support while sitting on the edge of the mattress

Once sat on the edge of the AS1 and concentrated all of my weight was concentrated over one area of the mattress. While I continued to see a little bit of compression through the top layer, I was pretty impressed with how the firm base layer held up to the increase weight. Overall I thought the AS1 performed well on the edge support portion of the review.

Amerisleep AS1 Front View

Now that we’ve taken a deep dive into the Amerisleep AS1, it’s time to discuss who I think would be a good fit with this mattress.

  • Firm Feel – There is a soft memory foam layer on top that provides a bit of pressure relief but, as all four of the testers noted, the overall feel of the AS1 is very firm. The high density poly foam base layer provides much of the feel for this mattress, leading to a very supportive and firm structure.
  • Sleeps Cool – Amerisleep uses a special memory foam that helps to draw heat away from the body to help people sleep a bit cooler. The cover is also made with Celliant, which will also help with temperature regulation and cooling.
  • Strict Back and Stomach Sleepers – The mattress is extremely firm which will help keep your hips from sinking too far into the mattress. By keeping your hips up, the AS1 will align your spine in a better position while you sleep, helping to avoid aches and pains in the lower back when you wake up.

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review

Formerly known as the AmeriSleep Liberty mattress, the AS3 mattress is one of the most popular products sold by the AmeriSleep company, which specializes in the sale of online mattresses that are shipped directly to the customer from the company.

AmeriSleep AS3 Mattress

Amerisleep is a popular company that sells a line of memory foam mattresses online. One of their most popular models is the AS3 mattress (formerly known as Liberty)

In this article, we are going to go over some of the key features of the mattress (such as firmness level, temperature regulation, how it is constructed, and so on) in order to help you understand whether or not this mattress is a good choice for your sleep needs.

The AS3 is their most versatile mattress. It evenly blends support and softness, so it’s great for people who change positions as they sleep and couples with different sleep styles. It’s also our most popular mattress overall. We combine our proprietary Bio-Pur™ and Affinity with SMT comfort layers to create a soft but responsive feel that relieves pressure points and makes you feel like you’re floating. Plus the high-performance Celliant® cover contains thermoreactive yarn to safely turn body heat into infrared.

Today, we will be discussing the Queen Mattress specifically, but you can rest assured that you will get virtually the same Real Sleep mattress experience discussed here even if you select an alternate size, so the information we will share here is still relevant when deciding whether or not this mattress brand is the right choice for you.

DELIVERY, UNBOXING & SET-UP

This mattress ships free to any locations within the contiguous United States; an additional shipping fee may be required for anyone who needs the mattress shipped to Alaska or Hawaii. It will be shipped in a cardboard box, and the mattress itself will arrive compressed and vacuum-sealed in plastic.

YOU LIKE THE AMERISLEEP AS3 MATTRESS IF YOU:

  • Want great pressure relief. If you’re looking for a mattress that can provide great pressure relief while you rest, then the AmeriSleep AS3 is a great choice for you. The special design of this mattress allows it to contour to the curves of your body, which can help to relieve the tension in your muscles and joints.
  • Want a mattress that sleeps cool. Unlike the majority of foam mattresses, which are notorious for retaining heat, the AmeriSleep AS3 is actually a good choice if you want something that can offer both comfort and pressure relief while also remaining cool as you sleep. This is thanks to the open-cell structure of the mattress which promotes greater breathability.
  • Good for any sleep position. Whether you sleep on your back, on your side, or on your stomach, this mattress is a good choice for the way it offers a great combination of body-contouring comfort and pressure relief as well as support.
  • Good for motion isolation. Because this mattress is made entirely out of different types of foam, it is a great choice when it comes to reducing motion transference. This makes it a good choice for anyone who sleeps with a partner or a pet who changes position often or gets into or out of bed in the middle of the night while you’re resting.
  • Want good edge support. Most memory foam mattresses by design offer little in the way of adequate edge support. The AmeriSleep AS3 mattress, however, provides very good edge support for an all-foam mattress. This means that you will never need to worry about falling off the edge of your bed.
  • Want a high quality mattress that is reasonably priced. Unlike similar mattresses from competing brands, the AS3 mattress from AmeriSleep is affordably priced. This means that you don’t need to break your bank account to get a mattress that offers you body-contouring comfort, pressure relief, temperature regulation, and motion isolation. Generally speaking, the AS3 mattress is (in most cases) about half the price of other brand name memory foam mattresses.
  • Want a great trial period and long-term warranty. Not only does this mattress comes with a trial period of one hundred nights, the warranty lasts for twenty years (which is twice as long as the warranties offered by many other mattress companies).
  • Want an eco-friendly memory foam mattress. Not only are all the foams used in the construction of this mattress CertiPUR-US certified, but they are also plant-based and contain no harmful chemicals or additives.
    AmeriSleep AS3 Mattress

Amerisleep is a popular company that sells a line of memory foam mattresses online. One of their most popular models is the AS3 mattress (formerly known as Liberty)

YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE THE AMERISLEEP AS3 IF YOU:

  • Don’t like memory foam. If you are someone who typically does not like the feel and texture of memory foam, then the AmeriSleep AS3 mattress is probably not eh right choice for you. Not only is the top layer made entirely out of a specially designed memory foam, but the middle transition layer and the bottom foundation layer are both made out of foams as well.
  • Want a very soft mattress. While this mattress is made out of plush body-contouring memory foam, it has an overall feel of medium-firm. This means that if you wan a truly soft mattress that you can ink into, then this might not be the right choice for you.
  • Want a very firm mattress. Again, this mattress is medium-firm with a plush top layer made out of body-contouring memory foam, so if you want a mattress that is incredibly firm and solid throughout its entirety then you might be better off with an innerspring mattress or a hybrid mattress (which combines innerspring coils with memory foam for a firmer mattress).

COMFORT & FEEL

The AS3 mattress from AmeriSleep is designed to be medium-firm. That being said, thanks to the top layer of specially designed memory foam, this mattress does offer a fair amount of plush comfort as well as excellent pressure relief.

Additionally, the specially designed transition layer in the middle of the mattress makes it more responsive than other types of foam mattresses; this extra bit of bounce makes ti a good choice if you want the body-contouring comfort of memory foam but don’t want the feeling of sinking into the mattress and getting stuck.

Generally speaking, this mattress rates as about a 6.5 or a 7 on a firmness scale of 1 to 10 (with one being the most plush and ten being the most firm). This medium level of firmness means that this mattress is a good choice for just about anyone, regardless of sleep position.

MOTION ISOLATION

The AmeriSleep AS3 is also a great choice if you want something that is good for reducing motion transference (the phenomena that occurs when movement in one portion of the mattress, caused by someone getting into or out of bed or changing position, transfer throughout the rest of the mattress).

The good motion reduction seen with the AS3 mattress comes from the fact that the proprietary memory foam that is used in its construction is, like most types of memory foam, great for absorbing movement.

That being said, because this mattress is also designed to be more responsive, it does not completely absorb all movement; it does absorb the majority of it, however, making this mattress a good choice if you want a mattress that can offer good motion reduction along with comfort, pressure relief, and support.

AmeriSleep AS3 Mattress

Amerisleep is a popular company that sells a line of memory foam mattresses online. One of their most popular models is the AS3 mattress (formerly known as Liberty)

OFF GASSING

Unlike many other brands of foam mattresses, the AS3 mattress from AmeriSleep features virtually no off gassing odors whatsoever. This is because the mattress is constructed with eco-friendly foams that are free from harsh and potentially harmful chemicals.

And while this mattress is vacuum-sealed and compressed for the shipping process, there should be no strange odors or smells when you unpack it and set it up. Ultimately, these factors make it a great choice if you want a foam mattress that you can use almost immediately, without needing to wait for any off gassing odors to dissipate.

EDGE SUPPORT

Mattresses that incorporate memory foam into their design are often not ideal when it comes to edge support, but the AmeriSleep AS3 actually displays surprisingly good edge support for a mattress that has a comfort layer made entirely out of memory foam. While the edge of the mattress will compress down if bearing large amounts of weight, you will never feel insecure (as if you are about to fall off) even if you are right on the edge of the mattress.

AMERISLEEP AS3 MATTRESS CONSTRUCTION

The AmeriSleep AS3 mattress is twelve inches thick and features three main layers as well as a soft cover that is made out of a unique fabric blend that contains polyester, spandex, and Celliant. This special fabric makes an excellent cover thanks to the way it stretches out easily while also staying smooth and cool to help promote comfort.

The top layer of the mattress (also known as the comfort layer) is constructed out of memory foam. This foam layer is three inches thick and the foam itself has 4 lb density, making it ideal for pressure relief and contouring to the curves of your body.

Furthermore, this top layer is designed to have a special open cell structure, which promotes breathability and heat dissipation. These factors mean that, unlike other foam mattresses that typically retain large amounts of heat, the AS3 mattress will actually dissipate the heat from your body rather than absorb it. Additionally, this foam is also made entirely out of plant-based materials, making the mattress as a whole more eco-friendly.

The middle layer of this mattress is the transition layer. This layer is constructed out of a special poly foam that has a density of 1.65 lb and is two inches thick. This layer serves two purposes: first, it functions as a transition layer between the soft and plush top layer and the firmer base layer; second, this layer adds a bit of bounce to the mattress, helping to make it more responsive so that you don’t feel stuck in place when you sleep. Additionally, this layer also features a unique design that promotes air flow and temperature regulation.

Finally, the third layer of the AmeriSleep AS3 mattress is the base layer. This layer is seven inches thick and constructed out of a high density poly foam that has a density of 1.8 lb. The main purpose of this last layer is to serve as a strong and firm foundation for the mattress as a whole; it also helps to provide deep compression support to you while you sleep and helps increase the overall durability of the mattress.
